Challenge: Prevent flooding around river outlets & valves for Southern Water
Solution: A bespoke solution was required to protect two river outlets complete with outlet valves. The area around the valves had to be clear of rubbish to maintain their operation and hence prevent flooding. Unauthorised access had to be prevented but access to the valves by maintenance personnel was a necessity.
Fabweld’s solution was to design a solution with grilles bolted to the top surface of the head walls, tails that protruded below the normal water level and hinged and locked access hatches.
The 3.5m square grilles were manufactured in galvanised steel to a FACTA load class of AAA. Installation instructions were also provided due to the slightly different angles of each head wall top edges.
Mr. Trevor Webb (Regional Manager) of Clancy Docwra commented:
FSP and Durey Castings were very flexible with their design ideas and last minute changes. The speed at which the grilles were designed and manufactured was second to none. The grilles fit the bill perfectly and their operation is just as required. Our client, Southern Water, was more than satisfied with the outcome.
