November 28, 2022 Trash screens vital to alleviate flood risk

With much of the UK on flood alert and more heavy rain forecast, householders, businesses and local authorities will again be looking at ways to prevent the damage and devastation that flooding can cause.

Several areas have experienced half a month’s rainfall in 24 hours, prompting more than 170 flood alerts across England and Scotland.

The government’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) research says that properly designed and maintained trash screens are vital in helping to prevent flooding.

Trash screens stop rubbish and debris building up and blocking tunnels, culverts and narrow waterways, so allowing excess water to move freely rather than building up into a flood.

Fabweld Steel Products supplies standardised trash screens in both galvanised mild steel and stainless steel finishes, with the option for all products to be adapted to fit your bespoke specifications.

FSP managing director Wayne Carter said: “Trash screens can only ever be part of the solution when it comes to flooding, and properly designed watercourse management systems and maintenance are essential.

“There is no doubt, though, that if water is channelled through a narrow tunnel or culvert, a trash screen can make a big difference to your flood risk.

“We can supply trash screens for any size scheme, whether it’s to stop a garden stream occasionally spoiling a garden to large schemes to prevent major flooding to lots of homes.

“Our screens are helping everywhere, from preventing litter and debris getting into the waterways in Telford Town Park, to protecting homes and businesses in a large water management scheme in Weston-super-Mare.”
